Introductions
hello from Terry Dolson (University of Richmond) I am only a little freaked out that this wiki doesn't seem to be wysiwyg!
Allan Chen, Santa Clara University

Define storytelling. What do I think it is?

Conveying a thought, a moment, an emotional response to event that has taken place. It can be told verbally, physically, electronically. (its early in the morning...I'm telling a story!) Susan

Platforms and examples
Private Art site - collection of WWII letters - blog-like back from 1997!

Here's a link to a "blog fiction" of mine (Rich Holeton):

http://improvencyclopedia.org/ For example: Five people go up and stand in a line. The audience gives them a name and an object. This sets the title of the story. Titles like 'Steve and his Magical Pencil' and 'Arthur and his Magical Spark'. Then, the pointer points, just like storybook. When an actor messes up, (repeats the last line, or waits too long to start), the audience gets to pick a creative way for them to die, like death by tattoo, or death by cinnamon gummy bear.

I like to use this sitehttp://www.digitales.us/index.php with my students to work on digital stories--it has great examples and resources

Exercises
Group 5: Omninous photo of a glove at a cemetary in Vermont

How did the glove get there? It is representative of a digital zombie possibly a member of the faculty buried under the weight of technology baggage such as lack of support, technology overload, lack of time, lack of incentives for recognition of innovation, etc. The weight has rendered the person immobile, sucked the breath right out of them.

What will happen next? You might assume it was dead but in fact, it lives! On a dark and stormy night a bolt of lightening struck the nearby tree and arched over to the glove. That burst of energy, derived from the the enlightenment of the administration, which agreed to provide year long sabbaticals for faculty to learn about technology. Stay tuned.....

Threads we would like to keep following...
Is there a conflict between authority and community? Communities like Beliefnet function because there is a kind of authority whose focus is to help people play nicely, rather than to espouse the "correct" beliefs. In the classroom, as educators, must we give up the concept of excellence in order to encourage all voices to engage? Do we need both?
